This is a reproduction of the county map of Bedfordshire engraved on eight sheets at a scale of 1:31680 by Thomas Jefferys in 1765. A plan of Bedford at a scale of 1:4700 is at the top right corner of the map.
Useful features include distances from London and Bedford; different types of roads depicted with distinctive symbols; hamlets; landowners; parks; natural features; turnpikes and toll gates.
The accompanying leaflet by Betty Chambers summarises Thomas Jefferys’ career and describes his role in producing the map. The map is no. 38 in Printed Maps and Town Plans of Bedfordshire 1576-1900 by Betty Chambers (1983), BHRS vol. 62
