Bedfordshire Historical Record Society’s 2023 AGM will be held at 2pm on
Saturday 23 September at the Priory Methodist Church, Newnham Avenue, Bedford.
The AGM will be followed by the Annual Lecture. This year BHRS is delighted to welcome
Dr Kathryn Faulkner
Who will speak on
The missing parrot and other felonies: paths to crime in nineteenth century Bedfordshire.
This lecture will be based on the Quarter Sessions records for Bedfordshire from 1830 to 1901. Cases heard at the Quarter Sessions covered a wide variety of offences, from violent crime, through embezzlement and fraud to petty theft. Whether they involve a riot against the introduction of the new Poor Law, a sailor’s missing parrot, or a bicycle chase across the county, the stories told in these records give both a fascinating insight into the nature of crime in the 19th century and a detailed picture of day-to-day life in the county.
